It is not a distant thing of the past.
Modern slavery is hidden, brutal, and closer than most people think — embedded in the products we buy, the industries we work in, and the digital platforms we use every day. Millions of the people who make the clothes we wear, the electronics we use and the food we eat are in some form of forced labour, and it frequently remains invisible even to the companies whose supply chains depend on it.
It is those already in situations of greatest vulnerability who are most affected — people living in poverty, workers in the informal economy, and unprotected migrant workers. The gap is not the absence of laws — almost every country has them. It is the lack of enforcement, and the invisibility of exploitation in complex supply chains. That means we all have a role to play.
